Will the IRS tell you when wage garnishment is to begin or do they just take the money from your check?

Your employer will notify you after they have been served with the wage levy order by the IRS.

This should come as no surprise to you though. The IRS only resorts to bank and wage levies after an extended period of no response from the taxpayer. You’ll receive several increasingly threatening letters requesting and then demanding payment and offering a payment plan. The final one will be a Notice of Seizure and Intent to Levy. Approximately 30 days after that notice, if you continue to ignore them, your bank accounts will be frozen and your employer will receive the wage levy order.
